Rafael Rosado launched his clothing company called Earl Salko in Philadelphia, which instantly ignited within him the urge to collect secondhand sewing machines. It was in his words out of the necessity to produce the garments they were selling out of the small studio.
With each sewing machine that collection grew and interestingly finding them wasn’t difficult either. Living in the North East meant that finding sewing skeletons from all eras was easy and cheap, mainly because the area used to be a major garment industry hub.
Today Rosado collects, then restores these sewing machines which are then used to create America themed and inspired clothing. He currently has 32 pieces in this collection, the oldest of which is one produced in 1890, and it is used to create modern clothing.
Old sewing machines are a marvel of engineering and even in today’s computerized era, it’s surprising to learn that they are being put to good use. However, Rosado isn’t new to the world of collections as he also has a book collection and a lighter collection.
Now you don’t need to move on over to the North East to start a sewing machine collection of your own, because depending on where you live it’s possible to pick up unique pieces at garage sales for a few dollars. However, be prepared to give them a new life.
A Growing Dice Collection
Being added to the cool things stored in self storage, Rose Ellen Burns started her dice collection back in 2008 and over the course of 11 years has been able to collect a significant number of unique dice. Her passion for collection dice started when out shopping for a game. Currently, Bruns has over 1k pairs.
The key for her has been to over the years keep an eye out for unique and fun looking pieces. These include handmade die carved dice made from stone, and just about every color die you can think of she has.
His advice for the aspiring dice collector is to just go into a card game shop and find interesting pieces. While Burns stores her collection in a diaper bag, our advice is to put it on display for everyone to see.
